HCMC 2013 Day 1 Reflection: War Remnants Museum and Water Puppet Show
1. Did you notice any variation in the way the war was being portrayed through the photos? Is there any bias?
No, this is because the photographs are all evenly spread as there are pictures of Americans defeating the Vietnamese and pictures of Vietnam defeating the Americans. Hence, both countries have equal victory and loss in the war.
2. What are the impacts of the war? Think along the lines of types (economic, social, political, environmental), as well as short/long term impacts. You may consider the impacts of Agent Orange and more.
The impacts are economic, social, political, environmental. This is because both countries are affected as the soldiers in both countries suffered heavy losses such as deaths, bankruptcy and environment due to agent orange which cause deformation of generation to generation.
3. Who won and who lost?
I think the Vietnamese won, this is because they had finally stop the war by pressing on against the Americans. Nevertheless, the Americans decided to surrender due to lack of power during the war.
4. Are there any lessons from the Vietnam War that Singapore can apply currently/in the future?
Yes, from this war, I think that Singapore needs to make peace with other countries or strengthen their ties with one another.
What do you think is the storyline? What do you know about the sources of livelihood in Vietnam?
I think is about understanding Vietnam’s culture and also find out more on what do the people do in Vietnam in the older days. It also shows what the people liked the most in Vietnam.
What is the purpose of the water puppet show? What other function does it serve besides entertainment?
I think it is for us to understand more about one’s country’s culture so that we could acknowledge or appreciate what is happening in the world today and tomorrow.
Would Singapore benefit from its own ‘water puppet show’? Why yes/no?
Yes, this is because we are letting tourists to know more about Singapore and they would appreciate and be interested to find out more about it. It could also solve people’s questions on what Singapore is than today.
