War remnants museum
1)Different photos had different view like some of them showed the cruelty of the Americans while others show how much hardship the soldiers went through. There is some bias against the Americans which is shown by the fact that most of the pictures showed the negatives of what the Americans did.

2)The  long-term effects of the war can be seen in the land mines and agent orange.. They harmed the people in Vietnam for quite a while after the war. Short term effects were that many people lost their lives or were permanently scarred and many people lost their homes.

3)The vietnamese won the war but due to the fact that they were fighting on their land they suffered the long-tern effects and both sides lost a lot in the war so it can be said that both countries lost.

3)War can be harmful to those who are living in the war zone so we should make sure that war does not break out in Singapore.

Water puppet show

I think the storyline is about Vietnam's past and legends. Their sources of livelihood include farming crops and fishing.

To remind the people to be hardworking. It teaches moral and tells us about Vietnam's past and legends.

It depends on the storyline of the show. If it is something that everyone can like and is important to Singapore's past and legends then yes. If not then the answer is probably no.

1. What are three good points about the school, students and staff that you noticed, which SST can learn from? The students are allowed to stay in class during the break when in SST they will make you go out of the class.

2. Why is it important for us to cultivate friendships with people from other nations?

The more the merrier. More friends are better than having enemies lol. If people from other nations do not get along and start a war that would not be fun now would it?

VSIP

1. What are factors influencing industrial location? Why do companies move?

There are many factors to that, such as the environment surrounding the location, how large a place is, and how cheap the land is. Companies move to other countries and set up factories there as production at the country that they intend to sell is much more convenient and cheaper for the company. They might also move due to competition at that particular area.

2. What is Singapore’s role in the VSIP? How does Singapore benefit from her involvement?

Singapore assisted VSIP in its construction and invited companies over to set up their factories there. Singapore gets money from companies and the items that they sell/

3. What influences the socio-econonomic development of a country?

The education and the income of the population working at the country affects how fast the country develops. Socio-economic development is measured with indicators, such as GDP, life expectancy, literacy and levels of employment. Changes in less-tangible factors are also considered, such as personal dignity, freedom of association, personal safety and freedom from fear of physical harm, and the extent of participation in civil society.

Causes of socio-economic impacts are, for example, new technologies, changes in laws, changes in the physical environment and ecological changes.

HCMC 2013 Day 2 Reflection: Can Gio Biosphere and Local Market

Can Gio Biosphere:

1. As you were travelling down the river, what were some problems you observed? What are the causes of these problems?

The river is filled with trash, making it hard for people to live on it. The people dump their trash inside as it is much more convinient.

The fishes near the river are hard to eat but the villagers in the vicinity only have the fish as their main food source.

2. Why do people stay near a river? How can the use of the river be sustainable?

The people near the river have access to the trading boats that come and go from their small “pier”. They can also use their boats to go to the main city and the market to find income and food. The river can be sustainable if they clean up the river that is filled by the trash therefore making it less smelly and dirty.

3. What does it take for a location/site to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site? Why is it essential for a location like Can Gio to be listed as such a site?

A site goes through a nomination process before being considered for inscription by the World Heritage Committee. A site can be proposed for inscription only by the country in which the property is located. The fame that the place gets and the law which prevents people from damaging its area means that the place will be preserved and that its existence will not be threatened

4. If there is a place in Singapore that you can list as a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is it? Why? The shophouses that are still at Chinatown. Since the place was where most of the first Chinese people who came to Singapore lived therefore it holds a sentimental value and past to many Singaporeans.

5. What is the difference between the market that you have visited VS that of Singapore’s. Why do you think there are such differences? The market in Vietnam is much more carefree and relaxed, it is normally much bigger than that of what you can find in Singapore as they use motorbikes to travel around. In Singapore most of the products that the vendor sells will be behind the counter while in Vietnam they just place it right outside their stall. Those that want their products can bring it inside to purchase it. While in Singapore the people don’t really talk to each other the vendors to exactly the opposite.

1. Did you notice any variation in the way the war was being portrayed through the photos? Is there any bias?

The exhibition items mainly displayed how the Americans tortured the Vietnamese people. There were only some items displaying how the Vietnamese captured the Americans and the Vietnameses that were helping them. The museum was obviously  sided towards the Vietnamese an d not the Americans.

2. What are the impacts of the war? Think along the lines of types (economic, social, political, environmental), as well as short/long term impacts. You may consider the impacts of Agent Orange and more.

The economy of both the warring nations and nations surrounding their borders gets affected, lowering the amount of people willing to invest in that particular country. The social ties of the country that declared the war is strained as the other countries will be more wary of making ties with them.

3. Who won and who lost?

In my opinion the Vietnamese won, because if the American forces took over Vietnam, the country would not be what it is today. And if they had not surrendered, the Vietnamese would not have their independance as of today.

4. Are there any lessons from the Vietnam War that Singapore can apply currently/in the future?

Wars are not beneficial to any of the two sides and that war will only cause death and misery to both sides.

Singapore must strengthen its ties with its neighboring countries so as to not fight over resources.

Singapore does not have enough resources to defend itself sufficiently therefore must rely on allies to support it when in times of trouble.

What do you think is the storyline? What do you know about the sources of livelihood in Vietnam?

The storyline was about how the Vietnamese people spent their day doing, though it was a tough and not really rewarding, at least it was a peaceful and humble way of living.

What is the purpose of the water puppet show? What other function does it serve besides entertainment?

It shows how the Vietnamese spent their time in the past such as fishing and for the Vietnamese farmer, buffaloes are the major source of power and the most valuable animal because they are hardworking and loyal. The show also depicted what animals the Vietnamese favoured most such as the four sacred animals which are the Dragons, Unicorns, Phoenixes and Tortoises.

Would Singapore benefit from its own ‘water puppet show’? Why yes/no?

No, if the story was poorly designed, other races would feel left out while one race feels all mighty about themselves, since Singapore is a Multiultural society it would contradict what Multicultural meant so that would not help Singapore in anyway shape or form.

No,although the first few level of the museum is bias towards the americans,as there is pictures where there were americans killing the Vietnam, the last level of it was the other way round.

1. Did you notice any variation in the way the war was being portrayed through the photos? Is there any bias?
I do think that it is more against Americans as there is a whole level about Agent Orange
and most of the pictures there are much bigger in size.Although the fourth floor has images that show that the Americans are not having a good time as well,the photos are much smaller.

2. What are the impacts of the war? Think along the lines of types (economic, social, political, environmental), as well as short/long term impacts. You may consider the impacts of Agent Orange and more.
I think if it is for the country that started the war,it may not have a good economy for the coming years as the relationship of the countries turn sour.

I did not think there is winning and losing.It is more of the perspective,on how you look at the war.As both side got huge after effects,after the war.

Strong bond within countries, so they will not attack each other,for the economy.

War Remnants Museum:

1. Did you notice any variation in the way the war was being portrayed through the photos? Is there any bias?

It seemed that they were biased towards the Americans, because they shown the more violent content of the Vietnamese victims, which seemed like they tried to put a lot of blame on the Americans.

2. What are the impacts of the war? Think along the lines of types (economic, social, political, environmental), as well as short/long term impacts. You may consider the impacts of Agent Orange and more.

The war may have prevented communism from "spreading" to other countries. The war have also hurt many innocent civilians(due to Agent Orange) and affected generations of people since pregnant women may get harmed and their babies may be borned differently.

3. Who won and who lost?

The Americans won, they prevented the spread of communism and also harmed Vietnam very badly due to Agent Orange. Although the Americans may have also lost many soldiers, but the Vietnamese were impacted much more.

4. Are there any lessons from the Vietnam War that Singapore can apply currently/in the future?

We have to prevent the use of chemical weapons so that the innocent people will not get harmed, unless we are really going 'all-out' on the country. We must also have good relations with other countries so that we can prevent any wars and end up losing resources.

I think that the storyline is about the Vietnamese's and how hardworking they are/have been during their lives. I think that the sources of livelihood in Vietnam is due to water puppet shows like these that entertain them as they depict their typical lives.

2. What is the purpose of the water puppet show? What other function does it serve besides entertainment?

The purpose of the water puppet show is to depict the life of a normal Vietnamese person. This show can also serve as a tourist attraction for people like me.

3. Would Singapore benefit from its own ‘water puppet show’? Why yes/no?

Singapore should benefit from its own water puppet show as the locals will definitely be entertained by the unique shows and the shows will be a good tourist attraction as it can show the typical Singaporean life.

The pictures from the museum is more bias towards Americans even though the last floor did come from the perspective of the americans,the second floor is talking about agent orange and how badly it affected Vietnam and the first floor is talking about how many people supported Vietnam.Overall it is bias against americans.
2. The agent orange not only causes the soldiers to be affected,even their children is affected.Some of them are born without their limbs and weird bodies.The agent orange also killed many men.With the war,the americans also place mines around Vietnam causing many to die and be injured

War Remnants Museum

1. The photos in War Remnants Museum is mostly biased towards the Vietnamese, where they showed the cruelty of the Americans in the war. 
However, there were some exhibits (One) which was not biased and focused on both sides’ perspectives. 
2. The impacts of the war, whether it was political, social etc, had mostly bad impacts on Vietnam. Vietnam’s economy would suffer because of the war, items can’t be exported to sell and earn money etc. People also would think badly about the Political Party leading Vietnam and would complain how they did not help out in the war, or end it by then etc. Agent Orange affected 3 Generations of Vietnam and babies have deforms etc. 
3. In my opinion, no one won the war. Both countries suffered horrible aftereffects, like genetical defects in the future generations. 
4. Singapore should create strong bonds with other countries by collaborating together to build something like maybe the Singapore-Vietnam Industrial Park so that a war would not break out between the 2 countries as it would affect both economically.

Water Puppet Show

1. What do you think is the storyline? What do you know about the sources of livelihood in Vietnam?
The storyline was about how the Vietnamese people spent their time back in the oldern days, though it was not as high-tech as compared to our days, but it was a fun and enjoyable time for them.

2. What was the purpose of the puppet show? What other function does it serve besides entertainment?
The purpose of the puppet show was not only to entertain the guests or tourist but to also teach them about the culture of Vietnam and how it was like for them before modernisation of their country.

3. Would Singapore benefit from having its own water puppet show? Why yes/no?
In my personal opinion, Singapore will not benefit from it. Firstly, it is because Singapore is a multiracial society, unlike Vietnam which is mainly populated by Vietnamese. When we make a water puppet show, we would mainly focus on one race. So, when we do so, the other races would start to complain about the government being unfair, thus leading to possibly racial riots and racial differences

1. The exhibits mostly showed how much the Vietnamese people had suffered during the war, and what they had to go through. They usually showed and explained about the Americans doing cruel things to the Vietnamese during torture. There are pictures of the Americans killing people, destroying villages through agent orange and treating Vietnamese people extremely badly.

2. The long term impact of the Vietnam War can be found from the land mines the Americans had placed, and also from agent orange. Agent orange had changed the environment and also many Vietnamese people, both physically and mentally. Three generations have been affected from agent orange, changing their genetic makeup. Many people have been killed, causing their population number to suffer.

3. Neither of the countries won, as there were huge losses inflicted on both parties.

4. Singapore could create strong bonds with as many countries around the world as possible, so that there will be lesser problems arising.

1. What do you think is the storyline? What do you know about the sources of livelihood in Vietnam?
I think that the storyline is about the daily routine and lifestyle of the Vietnamese in the past. They fished and farmed for food and also to make a living.

2. What is the purpose of the water puppet show? What other function does it serve besides entertainment?
The purpose of the water puppet show is to promote the Vietnamese culture. It gives us a glimpse of the Vietnamese past and lifestyle.

3. Would Singapore benefit from its own ‘water puppet show’? Why yes/no?
Yes, it would. It will show the future citizens of Singapore to understand our past, provided that they show all of the main cultures and not just one, as people may get offended.

1. Did you notice any variation in the way the war was being portrayed through the photos? Is there any bias?
Most of the portraits that are presented on the first and second floor are of the Vietnamese and how they are tortured but on the third floor, some of the portraits are what the Vietnamese did to the Americans but mostly is of how the Vietnamese are tortured. Yes there are some bias.

2. What are the impacts of the war? Think along the lines of types (economic, social, political, environmental), as well as short/long term impacts. You may consider the impacts of Agent Orange and more.
It caused the entire of Vietnam to become very messy and because of Agent Orange, people didn’t get much social interactions with others and caused some forests to die. The Agent Orange also affected 3 generations of people and caused people to be deformed.

3. Who won and who lost?
Neither. The Americans had to retreat and failed to protect South Vietnam from the communism by North Vietnam due to the number of Americans deaths in the war

Make an alliance with many other countries so when we are in danger, we have the aid from other countries.

   There was no bias. As the way the war was being portrayed showed the views of both parties, there isn’t any bias.

   The impacts of the war are causing the economy to shoot down and the after effects of chemicals to last awhile. The aftermath of the Agent Orange caused 3 generations of birth to produce deformed babies.

   The Vietnamese won the war. They won the war as they successfully managed to gain independence.

   No. As most of the stuff which both parties did was negative and would most of the time result in casualties, I feel that there are no lessons from the Vietnam War that Singapore can apply in the future.
